Cooke 5/i lenses

See in the dark -- with T1.4 speed and a focus ring that illuminates when you need it. External lamps are no longer necessary for the focus puller to see in the dark because this new design incorporates a simple on/off and dimmer to adjust the level of illumination desired on the aperture ring. You now have the visability you need without affecting the light coming into the camera.

Cooke 5/i optics offer superb optical and mechanical performance, control of flare, distortion, veiling glare and spherical aberrations at full aperture. The cam-type focus mechanism allows for smooth focus adjustments. Modular construction increases ease of maintenance and serviceability.

Cooke 5/i Prime Lenses were designed and developed in close technical collaboration with industry professionals. They are colour-matched and compatible with Cooke S4/i, Panchro by Cooke, CXX 15-40 mm T2 S4/i Zoom, 18-100mm T3.0 and 25-250mm T3.7 and the SK4 16mm lenses.

/i Technology

All of our 5/i Prime lenses are supplied with /i Technology, and are designed for all PL mounted professional motion picture film and electronic cameras. /i Technology provides cinematographers and camera operators with vital information on lens setting, focusing distance, aperture and depth-of-field, hyperfocal distance, serial number, owner data, lens type and focal length in both metric and footage measurements. For zoom lenses, the zoom position is displayed.

For companies interested in producing compatible products with /i Technology, the /i protocol is available as a free download: “Cooke /i Specifications, v2.41 Protocols" in PDF format.

65SF Soft Focus Attachment

The 65SF is made for the S4/i 65mm and 75mm lenses (via Cooke 75mm adapter ring). The design for the attachment is based on Cooke's PS945 soft focus lens for 4x5 large format photography. See the effect in sample photos taken with the PS945 lens. The effect is high resolution with a stunning glow to the highlights -- subtle, but most pronounced wide open at T2, becoming less pronounced as you stop down. (Effect from T2 to T4 with the 65mm lens; T2 to T5.6 with the 75mm lens.) More details.

Panchro by Cooke Prime Lenses, T2.8
18, 25, 32, 50, 75, 100mm

Cooke Panchro /i lenses

Panchro by Cooke is the latest range of lenses from Cooke Optics.

What we heard from the industry

While many DPs prefer to specify Cooke lenses to take advantage of the Cooke look as well as the on-set usability and reliable operation, cost has sometimes been a barrier.

In addition, many purchasers of digital cameras like Red also want a full set of lenses at a realistic price.

We also wanted to open up the opportunity to use Cooke lenses in risky situations such as on-board stunt work; lower costs lenses reduce rental and insurance costs.

Our goals for the new lenses

Our goal has been to deliver a smaller, lighter lens which offers the same resolution, optical quality and reliability as the S4/i, but at a lower price. We decided that the lenses should be equally suitable for shooting film and digital images up to and beyond a 4K resolution pipeline.

In addition the lenses include /i Technology, providing lens data per frame for downstream post production.

Like the S4/i lenses, the Panchro’s are designed for motion photography and they don't breathe.

The lenses are one stop slower than the S4/i, as a result they can be smaller and lighter.

All Cooke lenses are colour matched. This means Panchro by Cooke and S4/i lenses can be mixed on a shoot with full confidence that the images will match.

A brand new design

In order to build everything we wanted into the new lenses we needed a brand new design, built on our 100 years of experience of what works for filmmakers. These are 100% Cooke products manufactured by us to our traditional high standards in Leicester, England.   Panchro by Cooke is not a modified or re-badged externally-sourced product.  You choose Cooke, you get Cooke.

Cooke /i datalink User Guide

The Cooke /i dataLink records focus, zoom and iris settings for each frame onto an SD card using Cooke's /i "Intelligent" Technology. It will save you time, effort and money from production through post production. How?

Until now, production teams have had to manually record focus, zoom and iris settings for each and every shot for use in post production. There are obvious drawbacks to the archaic handwritten system, and especially when working with a zoom lens. Having accurate lens parameters for each frame of action makes some aspects of post production considerably easier and would give operators the ability to work on many more shots of greater complexity without the guess work. Accuracy and ease of use translate into saving time and money in post, which can be a considerable percentage of the total production budget.

The Cooke /i dataLink is a small box that mounts effortlessly to any camera that records the focus, zoom and iris settings of each take. The data is recorded on a Secure Digital (SD) card, storing recorded settings as metadata. The /i dataLink box features connections for inputs from the Cooke S4/i lens as well as the camera that allow both electronic platforms to communicate with the /i dataLink. The metadata is simply passed on to post production by means of the SD card, which guarantees that the relevant lens parameters will be available, ensuring even more accuracy in post.

Saving Money and Time in Post Production

In post, the stored data is uploaded to PFTrack software and is immediately ready to use without any manual manipulation -- a huge cost savings of time and guess work. PixelFarm, a developer of products for the post production market, set out to develop its PFTrack software to work specifically with Cooke /i lens communication protocols. PixelFarm is one of the UK's leading software manufacturers of systems commonly used in DI and VFX.

Some of the companies incorporating Cooke's /i "Intelligent" Technology into their products: RED, Aaton, Avid, Dalsa, ARRI, Cinematography Electronics, Mark Roberts Motion Control, Preston Cinema Systems, CMotion, Service Vision, The Pixel Farm.

Enhance your /i production system with the Cinematography Electronics /i Lens Display Unit. Extremely useful while filming.
